PART XV - SHIDOME

From the tourist point of view, Shidome is mainly known for Tokyo Tower.
Before we get there, let's stop for a while.

Nearby, In the Zojoji temple, small figures carved in stone symbolize children's cemetery. That makes me wonder - what is more touching, little coffin or a monument? And why so many children die in a highly developed country like Japan today?

Tokyo Tower is a nine meters taller reproduction of Paris Eiffel Tower. Since 1958, when the tower was built, it is still the biggest self-supporting steel construction in the world.

While Eiffel Tower weights about 7000 tons, Tokyo Tower is only 4000 tons, because of great development of steel production techniques and modern construction solutions.

During summer and fall, the tower is illuminated with orange light. In winter and spring, white colour takes over.

The lighting is occasionally changed for special events: for the first day of Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October) it is lit pink, for the first World Diabetes Day on November 14, 2007 it was lit blue, and for the Japan premiere of the movie The Matrix Reloaded, for instance, the Tower was lit in neon green).

Apart from supporting broadcasting antenna, the tower acts in many other ways.

There are many attractions waiting inside, like 50.000 fish aquarium for instance.

The other room contains the exhibition of well recognized pieces of art, turned into optic illusions.
Why the person siting on the stool doesn't have a shadow? Is it an illusion or is the person just damned? The answer is right here.

In the other part of the tower, visitors can meet likenesses of famous people and historical figures. All made of wax, like this one - Musashi Miyamoto...

It is time for another part - Guiness Records museum. A girl of average height stands before rather tall man.

The other day I ran across an article printed in Scientific American. It was said, that taller people live shorter. Except for naturally assumed cause - heart problems, there was another one saying that when tall people fall, it can be more serious.

The first observatory platform is located 150 meters above the ground level. Beautiful city panorama is visible from here. Second platform is 100 meters higher. With good weather conditions Mt. Fuji is visible.

Skyscrapers in Shinjuku are the premises of the town hall, corporation offices, hotels and many restaurants.

Comparing to other world metropolies, relatively small amount of very high constructions have been built here. Frequent earthquakes are to blame. For all that the city looks very futuristic.

In 1975 when Andriey Tarkovsky had been filming Solaris based on Stanislaw Lem's book, he had chosen Tokyo to be the city of the future.

The tower itself appeared multiple times as well in regular movies as in anime. It had been destroyed by Mohra, Gojilla, and King Kong fighting his mechanical double.

I was told, Tokyo Tower is scheduled for demolition. Instead another, twice as big tower of different construction will be erected. I believe in the new tower but don't think people of Tokyo will agree with destroying the old one. It means too much for them after all.
